There?s an old saying: ?If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably isn?t true.? There are some things that are so farfetched that their veracity is questioned at every turn. There are many ?seems too good to be true? things in life. Those ?seems too good to be true? things have been around forever I suppose. It is possible to detect them even in the resurrection of Jesus of from the dead. Have you ever thought about resurrection being something that seems too good to be true?
  • Miley Cyrus and the Disappearance of Childhood  (May 2, 2008)
Sometimes I think the late Neil Postman is the prophet for out time. After reading about the Miley Cyrus photo fiasco, I am convinced of this. This 15-year-old is the singing-acting-dancing daughter of country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus. "Hannah Montana" and Disney have crafted the image of this young lady as a safe role model for little girls.

  • What's in the Box?  (January 1, 2008)
I?m sitting in row seven watching Dr. Bob, our senior pastor, give today?s sermon for children. He raises a box and squints his eyes as though he is trying to figure out what is in it. Now most of us, children and adults alike, love guessing games. So, Dr. Bob calls his weekly children?s talk ?What?s in the Box?? Talk about mystery. The kids love it. So do the adults. Especially me.
  • Preaching Doctrine with Flavor  (January 1, 2008)
Doctrinal sermons tend to sound like Systematic Theology 101, a lecture rather than a message from God. Wouldn't you like to hear a presentation of biblical truth that was like warm, moist brownies instead?

  • An Alphabet of Grace  (November 1, 2007)
A 26-word parade of hope: beginning with God, ending with life, and urging us to do the same. Brief enough to write on a napkin or memorize in a moment, yet solid enough to weather two thousand years of storms and questions.

Whatever may be our theological system, this is the end of the doctrinal encyclopedia that generally gets scant utterance in the typical evangelical pulpit.
